What are the signs of heat/season in a female cat?

It’s that time of year again. The cat breeding season, so what are the signs your female cat is coming into season?

A change in behaviour is the most notable sign of a queen (female cat) coming into season. Cats become very affectionate, flirting with the furniture and their owners, as well as rolling around on the ground, constantly wanting attention.  When stroked over the back, they raise their rear quarters into the air and tread with their back legs. They also become VERY vocal. These behavioural changes can be concerning for owner’s and often interpreted as an illness or a cat that has been hit by a car!

Queens in season also attract those unwanted Tomcats with their urine spraying ways as they mark their territory.

Surgical spaying (removing uterus and ovaries) of queens certainly prevents these problems as well as preventing unwanted pregnancies, and reduces the risk of mammary cancer and uterine infections.
